Based on the 1985 classic starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Alysa Milano, COMMANDO: The Radio Play will bring one of history’s greatest action films back to a time when special effects were done with aluminum sheets, slapsticks, and celery. In the spirit of “It’s a Wonderful Life, The Radio Play,” this adaptation is performed with voice actors and live foley. No digital sound effects are used in this production.
COMMANDO: The Radio Play premiered at the 2019 Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival to critical acclaim and had a one night show at the Gas Station Arts Centre in 2020. The show was brought to the UK by Grove Theatre Eastbourne players where it was performed in Eastbourne, at the Brighton Fringe Fest, and the Hastings Fringe Fest to sold out audiences.
The show is back in Winnipeg with its original cast for the first time in four years, with a bigger stage for bigger sounds and even bigger action.
Former US Special Forces Colonel, John Matrix learns how hard being a single parent can be when the former president of Val Verde kidnaps his daughter Jenny. To get her back, Matrix will have to rely on the help of Cindy, a flight attendant with a knack for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Together, they’ll have to fight through a small army, a handful of the most ruthless mercenaries, and 40 mall security guards to save Jenny.
COMMANDO: The Radio Play features the voice talent of Cathy Herbert (DnD Improv), Sam McLean (DnD Improv), and Will O’Donnell (Netflix’s How it Ends). Also starring sound effect artist and comedian, Abby Falvo (Sound design for Evil Dead the Musical, Winnipeg Comedy Festival).
COMMANDO: The Radio Play will be playing at The Park Theatre (698 Osborne St.) July 17 - 21 and July 23 - 27 at 7:30 PM as part of the Winnipeg Fringe Festival. Tickets are $14 and can be purchased on the Winnipeg Fringe Festival website. For details and updates on the production, follow us on Instagram at @commandotrp.
